Week 1

Use scientific methods to study topics such as happiness, well-being, and resilience.

(Seligman’s Model of well-being)

P: Positive emotion
E: Engagement
R: Relationship
M: Meaning and Purpose
A: Accomplishment and Achievement

(What you value decides what gauge is important for you!)
(what positive qualities, relationships, and activities do you want to nurture and have flourish in the garden of your lie? )
    • あなたの人生のなかで、その時は「ネガティブ」と思っていたが、いま振り返ってみると「ポジティブ」なことは、何か思いつきますか?(Can you think of something in your own life that at the time you would have labeled ‘negative’ but now, looking back on it, you would have labeled as ‘positive’? )
    • 逆に、その時は「ポジティブ」と思っていたが、いま振り返ってみるとやらなければよかったと思うことはありますか?(Conversely, can you think of something that at that time you’d have labeled ‘positive’, but now looking back on it, you wish you had not done? )
(Learned helplessness)
2/3 leaned helplessness. 1/3 didn’t learn helplessness.
    • The personality matters - pessimists or optimists?
  • challenge pessimistic thoughts -> statistically possible to prevent depression and anxiety

Week 2

(Active Constructive Training)

(Being whole - mind/body health throughout life)

    • We metabolize the past and the future to create futures. Memory is not about what happened in the past. Memory seems to be in service of the future, it’s not photographic image of the past.

“Thinking prospectively, Seligman and his co-authors propose that the role of memory is not to remember the past but to prepare us for the future. Our memories are not accurate recordings of what has happened but narratives we invent “for the forward guidance of thought and action . . . Memory is for doing.”

“What makes prospective theory revolutionary is not the idea that human behavior is guided by emotions, but the idea that human behavior is guided by “anticipated emotions.” Our emotional experiences help us to better predict how our choices and experiences will make us feel in the future, and this motivates our behavior.”

(The science of Perspection)
  • Learned helplessness - animals can learn nothing can change the shock, and become passive.
    • But Cortex can imagine good things may happen in the future.
  • Dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN)
  • somanizer(心理的なネガティブさを身体的痛みとして感じるひと)もいるが、そうでなくても、悲観的な人は病気になりやすいらしい…
(2012 Review by Bothm and Kubzansky)

“As this review (which includes 10 studies) suggests, the link between optimism and a healthy heart is real and robust. But this is just an association. This research doesn’t mean that optimism causes a healthy heart. It’s possible that being healthy causes people to be more optimistic. Or even another variable might be at play here that causes both optimism and a healthy heart to be related. While there is increasing evidence thathigh well-being does cause better health and longevity, we definitely need more research that follows people up over a long period of time and looks at the precise mechanisms that cause these factors to be related.”

  • “Beyonder” characteristic
    • Torrance study measured “Beyonder” Characteristic
      • A. Love with an image of future (dream, something to believe in, of themselves)
      • B. Imagination network (brain network)
      • C. Openness to experience
      • A correlates to B, B correlates to C, C correlates to Creativity in Life, Creative Achievement
(Creativity is not efficient)
      • The sum of positive and negative emotions (than measures of positive or negative emotions alone) relate to creativity.)

“The creative life may not always be pleasant, but stick with it, because it can ultimately lead to a deeper and more meaningful sense of well-being.”

(Eudaimonic well-being - 6 dimensions)
  • Autonomy
  • Environmental mastery
  • Personal growth
  • Positive relationships with others
  • Purpose in life
  • Self-acceptance

Week 4

Positive journalism → Constructive journalism

    • Positive psychology -> Positive journalism ? -> Constructive journalism
    • Is constructive journalism finally taking off? - WAN-IFRA

(Eichstaedt, et.al, 2015, Psych Science)
